Purpose
The A&WMA was established in 1907 and has chapters throughout the United States and Europe. The organization is a nonprofit, nonpartisan professional organization that enhances knowledge and expertise by providing a neutral forum for technology exchange, professional development, public education and outreach to more than 13,000 environmental professionals in 65 countries. The A&WMA also promotes global environmental responsibility and increases the effectiveness of organizations to make critical decisions that benefit society.
Golden Empire Chapter
The Golden Empire Chapter of the A&WMA consists of members from the manufacturing, chemical, agriculture, oil, and gas industries, as well as numerous local government agencies. All meetings and conferences are open to the public (membership is not required) and open attendance is encouraged. All proceeds from the Technical Conference fund our scholarship and educational grant program, which provides money to local schools and students to pursue science-related endeavors in the hope of preparing a new generation for environmental stewardship. The Golden Empire Chapter provides thousands of dollars each year to Central California schools and students through this program.
Publications
One of the primary ways the Association helps members meet their professional goal is by providing environmental knowledge through its two monthly publications.
The Journal of the Air & Waste Management Association, A&WMA’s flagship publication, is the oldest continuously published, peer reviewed, technical environmental journal in the world. In print since 1951, the Journal features the latest in cutting-edge research and technology.
EM, the magazine for environmental managers, covers the environmental industry from a management, policy, and regulatory perspective, providing in-depth analysis of the issues affecting today’s environmental professionals. Professional Development The Association, with international headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, offers a series of conferences, workshops, and courses to help keep members up to date on new developments in the profession.
The Annual Conference and Exhibition is the Association’s largest gathering, attracting thousands of environmental professionals from around the world. Attendees gather to hear hundreds of technical papers on cutting-edge topics and to interact with exhibiting business and organizations demonstrating the latest environmental products and services. The Association also sponsors between 6 and 10 specialty conferences a year—including Audio and Web conferences—on topics such as global climate change, emission inventories and measurements of toxic and related air pollutants; workshops on a range of environmental issues; and more than 30 continuing education courses, including the Environmental Practices Review course, which serves as a preparatory course for the QEP certification exam.
Other career advancement opportunities provided to A&WMA members include a job bank, an extensive Web site, and hundreds of publications on key air and waste issues.
International Scope
Although most Association members reside in North America, A&WMA has spearheaded an effort to build an international network of environmental professionals by establishing sections and chapters worldwide. A&WMA has two sections in Mexico, as well as sections in Brazil, Europe, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Saudi Arabia. In addition, Thailand and Singapore are chapters of the West Coast Section.
